City Hall is a dominant municipal and tourist structure right in center city Philadelphia. Built on one of the original five squares outlined by William Penn, the founder of the city, this massive architectural masterpiece sits at the intersection of Broad and Market streets. Construction of this beautiful building started in 1871 and it was completed in 1901 at a cost of $24 million. The structure dominated the city skyline for a long time and between 1901, the time of its completion and 1908 was the tallest habitable building in the world at 548 feet!! The observation deck right at the base of William Penn's statue offers a beautiful birds eye view of the city. The tower, which you see here, is on the north side of the building and is considered to be the "front" of the building.
Currently with more than 700 rooms and 250 sculptures that are spread throughout the massive structure City Hall competes for attention with the modern buildings in and around downtown, however, the architectural detail is simply unmatched. The building is a National Historic Landmark.
