A majestic bird, irrespective of whether its in flight or just stationary, the Great Blue Heron is native to most parts in North America. Currently the largest of the heron species, the great blue herons can be found in large groups in fresh and saltwater wetlands, mangrove swamps, marshes and bayous. This photograph was taken while coasting on the Honey Island Swamp, just outside of New Orleans, Louisiana. These birds are as stationary as a rock when scouting and surveying for their prey. But once they locate the prey, they move with lightning speed, which probably might come as a surprise to many, including the prey itself! With the sun behind the subject, providing the much needed light, I was able to photograph this bird just about ready to takeoff after it had sighted its prey.
