This beautiful flower belongs to the genus Lilium and is also known as Lilium Superbum. Turks Cap Lilies are native to the eastern and southeastern parts of North America. This also happens to be one of my favorite flowers. The buds themselves are as beautiful as, if not more, than a fully bloomed flower. Upon full bloom, these flowers are either a deep shade of yellow or orange and their petals open up downward and curve up, which is quite a distinctive feature of this particular species of lilies. The Turks Cap is different from its sister, the Carolina Lily in that once it has fully bloomed, there is a green star shaped pattern at the center of the flower. These flowers can be found blooming right along the Blue Ridge Parkway during very late spring/early-mid summer, which typically falls between very late May and mid-end August. This photograph was taken sometime in the 2nd week in July 2009.
In this picture, I endeavored to photograph this from an artistic standpoint, which is why most of the flower is out of focus while the stem/flower joint is in sharp focus. I believe that this gives this photo a painterly feel.
