This beautiful bird, which also happens to be India's National Bird, belongs to the genus Pavo of the pheasant family. The female is called a peahen, the male is a peacock and the offsprings are called peachicks. The vibrant colours that you see in the plumage are not due to the pigments, but due to light reflections from the nano structures of the barbules in the feathers. There are a couple of different species of the peafowl. The Indian peafowl belongs to the species Pavo Cristatus and the Green Peafowl, found in parts of SE Asia belongs to the species Pavo Muticus. The Green Peafowl is an endangered species, mainly due to hunting and reduction in its habitat. There is a third variety, the Congo peafowl, which belongs to the Afropavo congensis species. Peafowl are omnivorous and feast on plants, reptiles and amphibians. This bird has a special place in the Hindu culture, as it is the mount of Lord Karthikeya, the Lord of war. In vanquishing the demons, the Lord split the body of the demon and made one half into the peacock and the other half into a rooster, which is the emblem on His flag. In the middle eastern parts of Asia, the peacock has been considered as a symbol of royalty. These birds have also been associated with pride and vanity as they enjoy "showing off" their beauty to their mates and use it as a potent form to attract the females in their species during mating season.
